This week’s must-see shows: August 27 – September 3

Operators

Dan Boeckner‘s latest musical project has celebrated two milestones in

Toronto. Operators played their debut live shows at Canadian Music Week in 2014, and in February the band returned to open for the New Pornographers on the Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs main man’s birthday.

Although it’s unclear whether the dancey electronic punk group’s gig at Adelaide Hall on Friday will mark another special occasion, it’ll at least be significant for a more immediate reason: admission is free thanks to sponsorship by beer brand Grolsch.

If you have yet to see Operators live, expect to dance. The band’s EP1 introduced their catchy dance-pop leanings, and Boeckner, who recently holed up in the Gladstone Hotel to write material for their forthcoming debut LP (according to Twitter), has been name-checking Depeche Mode and late 80s acid house in interviews.
