This week’s must-see shows: Mannie Fresh, Panamania and Interpol

Mannie Fresh

One of the originators of New Orleans bounce music and the architect of the sound of Cash Money Records in its heyday, Mannie Fresh appears to be settling rather nicely into his elder-statesman-of-hip-hop years.

As Cash Money’s former in-house producer, he spent more than a decade making hits and albums for Juvenile, Lil Wayne, T.I., Young Jeezy, the Hot Boys and Big Tymers, but in recent years he’s shifted his focus from producing and rapping to DJing.

The 46-year-old is now a regular at events organized by Red Bull, which teams up with The Remix Project for his appearance at Tattoo Friday (July 10). The show is billed as a set of number-one hits, so expect to hear Still Fly, Back That Azz Up and Go DJ, though Fresh has also been representing New Orleans in DJ sets that delve deeper into the origins of bounce or apply the NOLA sound to everything from classic pop to Minneapolis funk and country.
