This Week’s Must-See Toronto Shows: August 6 to 12

Jamie xx’s In Colour has been one of the most talked-about albums of the year, but don’t expect to hear a straightforward selection of cuts from the nostalgic record at his sold-out gig.

In an interview with the New York Times, the London musician said his shows will be more like DJ sets since he feels “awkward” recreating his songs onstage. “I’m not going to play gigs as Jamie xx. I’m just going to DJ,” he said. “I try to work in a lot of my own stuff in an interesting way and play clips of it so as not to be boastful…. I’ll generally play a bit deeper and take a few more risks.”

“Deeper” means weaving in disco, deep house, jazz, jungle, techno and other sounds and samples that informed In Colour, which heavily drew upon British club music from the 90s.

But he isn’t totally ignoring the album. During a gig in Los Angeles, he debuted a Dre Skull remix of his summer anthem I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times) – a collaboration with Young Thug and Popcaan – that features verses by dancehall artists Assassin, Konshens and Kranium.
