This week’s must-see Toronto shows

Mac DeMarco

Mac DeMarco’s brand of surfy garage pop isn’t for everyone. The prolific Montreal-living musician loves pitch-shifting his vocals and guitar on record, making low-budget Tim & Eric-style music videos, and giving off a tongue-in-cheek, irreverent vibe. His music is the sonic equivalent of stumbling off an amusement park ride with a stomach full of cotton candy: fun, woozy, unsettling. But don’t be fooled. Beneath the weird, DeMarco is a terrifically skilled guitarist, songwriter and lyricist. And lots of us are on board. His debut full-length album, 2, has earned him Pfork love and recently made the Polaris Music Prize long list.
