This week’s must-see Toronto shows: Beliefs, Canadian Beatbox Championship, Wand and more

Beliefs

Press materials for Beliefs‘ second album, Leaper, explain that shoegaze duo Josh Korody and Jesse Crowe were inspired to start a band after bonding over a shared love of 90s music and, more specifically, “the memory of reverb and fuzz.” Indeed, the time when rock music intentionally produced to sound less than pristine had infiltrated mainstream consciousness is but a memory. However, shoegaze and post-punk are alive and well in Toronto thanks in part to Korody, who spreads the fuzz and distortion through his other shoegaze band, WISH, his noisy techno outfit, Nailbiter, and as an engineer for Dilly Dally and Greys.

As far as album titles go, Leaper (Hand Drawn Dracula) is about as shoegazey as it gets. The record heavily evokes the fast-paced, upbeat guitar sounds of UK acts like Chapterhouse, but also the artful detachment of poppier, Goo-era Sonic Youth. The Leaper release show Thursday will be a good place to take a trip down reverb memory lane, as Beliefs will be joined by new wavers Role Model, post-punks Vallens and Korody’s Nailbiter (playing a late-night set).
