This week’s must-see Toronto shows: May 7-13

WAXAHATCHEE

Philadelphia-by-way-of-Alabama indie rocker Katie Crutchfield follows in a tradition of singer/songwriters like Kurt Cobain and Fiona Apple whose honesty has resonated widely and deeply.

In a recent interview with New York Magazine, she said her grungy third album as Waxahatchee, Ivy Tripp, explores depression, directionlessness and times when life diverts us from the traditional married-with-kids path to a more individual one.

“Neither one necessarily makes you happy, so that’s something I was really thinking about and observing a lot,” she said.

This year is shaping up to be Crutchfield’s biggest. Respected indie label Merge put out Ivy Tripp, and the character Beth Greene performed part of her 2012 song Be Good on a recent episode of massively popular zombie show The Walking Dead.

Not surprisingly, advance tickets for her Garrison show are sold out.
