Satan holds a paintbrush

If you happen to be near Dundas and Dufferin between now and January 15 and you have a few minutes to spare, pop into the Goodwater Gallery (1450 Dundas West), where artist Steven Shearer has mounted a series of stark black-and-white paintings. The paintings are awesome, based on prototypical black/death metal lyrics about skullfucking Armageddon and drinking the vomit of priests and stuff, although it’s way more complex than it sounds.

When asked about the motivation for his work, we think Shearer said something about a collective unconscious, although we’re not entirely sure cuz we got lost in jargon like “diaric” and “sophisticated.”

But rock the fuck on, dude.

CASBY crop

In case you forgot to win tickets on the radio or were too busy watching Lost last Wednesday, November 24, to head down to the Kool Haus for the Edge’s annual CASBY (Canadian Artists Selected By You) Awards , here’s a brief overview of the big winners: Hard Core Logo acolytes and purveyors of punky anguish Billy Talent swept the new single and new album categories, winning props for their hit River Below and self-titled Warner debut respectively. Straight-up East Coast rock boys the Trews were dubbed favourite new artist, while the pride of the Grimsby/St. Catharines region, Alexisonfire , scored NXNE favourite new indie release honours.

Would that we could provide a similar summary of hosts the Trailer Park Boys ‘ edge-of-tasteless antics, but for that, you had to be there.
