Upcoming: World Electronic Music Festival, July 21-23
There are two striking things about the 12th annual World Electronic Music Festival (www.wemf.com) this weekend at Trudeau Park in rural Tweed, Ontario. The first is the fact that it's still going on and that it's still so anticipated. Let's face it, there isn't much of a rave scene any more, but somehow WEMF still manages to attract thousands of people willing to camp out for three days while being bombarded with beats. Perhaps the reports of dance music's demise were a tad premature. Mind you, the second and even more telling aspect if this year's fest is the prominent billing given to the new indie-rock-focused stage, featuring Broken Social Scene, Pilate, Controller.Controller and Mobile. Dance music may be alive and well, but the line between it and rock has blurred so much that neither can continue to define itself in opposition to the other, which is probably healthy for both genres.
