Von Drats take 2
The record release party for the von Drats' swank surf 7-inch So Long Stinktown on Toronto's Boppa Do Down label is now slated for December 12 at the Cadillac Lounge (1296 Queen West). The launch was originally scheduled for September until the records didn't show up because of pressing delays.
Vinyl might be making a comeback, "but what you don't hear is that almost every vinyl pressing plant in North America is out of business," says label boss Tim Hanna, who also runs the cool record shop Frantic City (123 Ossington). "There's nowhere in Canada where you can get singles made any more, so we had to go to United in Nashville, which is suddenly super-busy because all the major labels and bigger indies want to do vinyl releases. That's why our order for 500 singles was delayed.
"The lesson," Hanna says, "is never schedule a record release party until you've got vinyl in hand."
Robin Orbeta-Lacambra (left), Rolly Orbeta and Tiffany Laval have high hopes for their new multi-purpose event space.
If you were strolling around Ossington during Nuit Blanche this year, you may have noticed a big crowd lining up to get into an auto-repair garage and wondered what was up. Turns out it wasn't just a weirdo one-off party, but the beginning of a new open-ended event space in what was formerly Rolly's Garage.
Robin Orbeta-Lacambra, the daughter of the garage's namesake, saw an opportunity when her father decided to retire and close the business. She begged him to hand it over to her to turn into a multi-purpose room in which to hold art openings, screenings and music events.
It won't be a full-fledged bar any time soon, and until the space is rezoned you'll have to RSVP to get into most events.
They've already hosted a few private events, including a 7-inch release party for up-and-coming local synth-rock trio Styrofoam Ones and the aforementioned Nuit Blanche bash. Their official launch on Saturday (November 29) features local artists hawking their wares alongside some live music.
