BLACK MARKET RECORDS Looking back at the highlights of the last year, one name keeps coming up across the genres. Black Market Records is technically a record shop, but has had a hand in the top techno, deep house, drum 'n' bass and electro-house events of the year, bringing a UK perspective but collaborating well with local promoters.
LOVE MOVEMENT at Alto Basso Weekday nights in Toronto's club scene have been largely deserted since the smoking bylaw, but this Monday-night hiphop weekly at Alto Basso has been insanely busy, hosted by K-OS and featuring hotshot residents DJ Na Na and DJ Fase .
SANTA CRUZ Ostensibly a singles night for indie scenesters, Santa Cruz is even weirder than that. Hilarious, unpredictable, surreal and sexually charged, these monthly events feature hot live bands, DJs playing guilty pleasures mixed with indie boogie, acrobats, loosely choreographed dance performances and whatever else Tyler Clark Burke 's eccentric mind comes up with.
MILK at Sunnyside Pavilion Milk have thrived through cooperation, joining forces with RNB to make the summer season of parties at Sunnyside Pavilion a success, teaming up with other promoters for large and small events and throwing their own popular parties featuring top international DJ talent.
HIGH FIDELITY SATURDAYS at Boa-Redux Saturday nights at Boa-Redux have been the most consistent spot to find good late-night (or early-morning) parties, and I say this as someone who doesn't really like big-room tribal house.
FOOTPRINTS at the Rivoli Every month, Jason Palma , DJ Stuart and General Eclectic throw a party in the back room of the Rivoli, dropping their favourite Latin jazz, Brazilian, funk, soul and jazz funk to an enthusiastic and sweaty dance floor.
I GET HYPE You'd think hip house would be a tougher sell in 2004, but this series of parties devoted to that brief time in the late 80s when hiphop and house crossed paths were a hell of a lot of fun, and sometimes that's enough.
EXPENSIVE SHIT at Club 56 Captain Easychord and DJ Nunk had a rough time when Club 56 closed down earlier this year, but now the infamous space has a new owner, and the eclectic open-format bash is back where it belongs.
PHATBLACKPUSSYKAT at Roxy Blu Junior Palmer 's Voices and Classics parties (devoted to live vocalists and classic house, as the names suggest) have kept the deep soulful house torch burning at Roxy Blu, and they still consistently deliver a great night of dancing.
PROMISE SUNDAY BEACH PARTIES at Cherry Beach Once again, the loosely organized free parties thrown by Promise at Cherry Beach on summer Sunday afternoons have provided a real alternative to clubbing in a bar. Let's hope they continue next year.
