Toronto’s Long Winter celebrates 10th anniversary with Together Apart series

Fiver's Simone Schmidt at the Silver Dollar in 2017. They'll launch Long Winter's new series with a performance on the roof of the Garrison.

Long Winter went virtual last year, but it’s back for a big 10th anniversary year.

The Toronto multi-disciplinary music and art series is extending into fall with a series called Together Apart, which will run from September to November. It’s an extension of Long Winter‘s partnership with Paris, France’s Collectif MU/La Station, a binational exchange also called Together Apart.

The series starts on September 24 and 25 with a pair of outdoor concerts on the roof of the Garrison (five days before the Dundas West venue reopens its own doors). September 24 will feature performances by Fiver, LAL and Status / Non Status while September 25 gets sets from OBUXUM, Mr. Joy and Zones (all local bands).

Long Winter then picks back up a month later, on November 26 and 27, at St. Anne’s church at Dundas and Dufferin. November 26 acts include Owen Pallett, Odonis Odonis, Bernice and Orphx. November 27 has a more electronic bent with New Chance, Ziibiwan and Casey MQ and Ceréna of Club Quarantine.

The November dates will also feature a conference that will span both Toronto and Paris as part of Together Apart. It will focus on resource and information-sharing between underground scenes, while focusing on access to DIY art space – an issue that has been exacerbated during the pandemic.

“DIY scenes are highly threatened spaces,” reads a message on the Together Apart website. “This was true before the pandemic, and has never been more evident. Despite being sources of the most prescient, often revolutionary, developments in arts and culture, DIY artists and community leaders remain systemically under-resourced and under-represented.”

As per Long Winter tradition, there will also be art and presentations by other local DIY organizations: Bunker 2, Younger than Beyoncé, Xpace Gallery and more.

The events will be a hybrid mix of in-person and virtual, so if you can’t get a ticket or prefer not to be in a crowd you can also watch online.
