Uproc party roars with the Wolf

PEANUT BUTTER WOLF as part of Uproc with DJs SERIOUS, KOLA, JOHN KUMAHARA and MIKE K at Una Mas (422 Adelaide West), tonight (Thursday, December 20). $10-$15. http://www.kolakube.com Rating: NNNNN

Peanut Butter Wolf founded his Stones Throw label in hopes of being the next Cold Chillin’. In the hiphop underground, that isn’t much of a stretch.

The Los Angeles imprint has become one of the most crucial labels for freaky, rule-bending hiphop, releasing everything from one-man upsetter Madlib and his own seminal cut-up album, My Vinyl Weighs A Ton, to the raw, sample-sourcing funk of Breakestra and the new and dusty Funky 16 Corners singles comp.

With a hiphop-grounded sound that truly knows no bounds, it’s entirely appropriate that the Wolf is the guest DJ at tonight’s (Thursday, December 20) Uproc anniversary party. The Uproc crew of DJs Serious, Kola, John Kumahara and Mike K share Peanut Butter Wolf’s open-ended approach to beat music, spinning everything from old-school beatboxing to jazzy house. If the Wolf lived in Toronto, he’d probably be an Uproc resident DJ.

Tonight’s party celebrates a year of Thursday-night throwdowns. The crew have just pressed up a limited number of mixed CDs showcasing the spread of music they play. Ask nicely and maybe they’ll give you one.
