Uzi Vs. Ford

UZI VS. FORD at Moskito + Bite (423 College), tonight (Thursday, April 25), 8 pm. $20. moskitobite.com. See listing.

With another year and a half left in the Rob Ford era, you might feel less than optimistic about the future.

But have no fear, Hogtown. Your redemption draweth nigh, and its name is Uzimon.

On Thursday, the Brooklyn-based reggae/hip-hop artist also known as UZI arrives with backup – everyone from local gadfly Bong Man to YouTube crusader Toronto Batman and his nemesis, Toronto Spiderman.

The idea, says the event’s Facebook page, is for this rabble of performers to raise funds for Uzimon’s mayoral campaign and “issue a formal challenge to the Gravy Train himself.”

Likely? Probably not. New York City-dwellers aren’t eligible to run for office here. But if the Ford mayorship has been anything, it’s over the top and blustery in its lack of subtlety. An artist whose mission is to “[invade] Toronto from the rear in order to oust incumbent Mayor Ford and reclaim Toronto for the people” surely fits that description.

“I have yet to have the pleasure of performing in Toronto,” Uzimon admits. Apparently, Mr. Ford’s reputation precedes him, even in the Lower 48.

Ford was unavailable for comment.
