WAVVES at Lee’s Palace. Fri Jun 18. myspace.com/wavves Rating: NNN
The buzz around Wavves’ lo-fi noise rock hit a fevered pitch last year when singer Nathan Williams fought his drummer on stage in Barcelona, and had to take a break from the band. Now back as a trio, Wavves’ set began with interminable banter about squirrels and reverb.
When the band finally did play, their simple, rough-and-tumble tunes connected with fans, but failed to display any depth in terms of songwriting. Each song sounds like Williams discovered a cool riff, added some flange, and found some stoners to play along.
Not sure what all the fuss was about.
