New Constellations Artist: Waawaate Fobister

As part of this month’s New Constellations Digital Residency, we’re featuring some of the artists and mentors joining the nation(s)wide tour running from November 23 to December 20, 2017.

What’s your favourite song at the moment?

I don’t have favourites. But the last few days I am listening to Tanya Tagaq. Powerful, feminine and strong woman and I channel this strength listening to her.

How do you celebrate a great performance?

Of my own? Ha! I used to say beer, but I don’t drink anymore. These days? Pie!

The best place in Toronto to enjoy winter weather is …

I don’t live here anymore. But someone’s warm comfy bed or couch in a blanket and hot tea with good conversation.

What’s the last performance/concert you saw?

Native Earth Performing Arts’ Weesageechak!

Name one other New Constellations artist you think audiences should see during this nationwide tour.

All of them, if only!

Describe the best gig you’ve ever played.

I did my solo show at the National Arts Centre and my parents, aunties, uncle and cousins travelled 20-plus hours in the winter across Ontario to come watch. At the curtain call they were giving me a weeping standing O. Pretty powerful to me. I cried too. Haha!

New Constellations will bring together a lineup of Canada’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists. Why is that an important feature of this tour to you?

It brings different audiences together. It will give the audiences different voices, sound, performance they may have never heard before. As a theatre artist, this is new to me, but I find it really freaking cool!

What’s coming up for you next?

I am working on a couple new shows, which I can’t say too much about it in this time. But soon!
