NOW staff like attending Austin's SXSW music festival so much that we help start our own in 1995, launching the North By Northeast (NXNE) music festival and conference. Partnering with the pros at SXSW as well as key Canadian music insiders, NXNE launches dozens of careers and provides a place to catch early performances by Sarah Harmer, Billy Talent, the Matthew Good Band, the Constantines, Sam Roberts and many more. We add a film festival where music is the star of the show in 2001. Today Canada's most important music festival takes over 32 clubs for three days in June and features hundreds of bands.
A black person is a person who claims to be black. We should always be self-defining. - Rita Deverell, senior producer at Vision TV

What you actually have in a bar is a brutal, visceral experience, not intimacy. You have someone who's in front of you in a rage. The only way to make contact with them is to spit at them, grab their balls, throw yourself onstage and get thrown off. - Pete Townshend
Serial killers are like Elvis. They're popular, and there's a flippancy inherent in their appeal - serial killer jokes, fanzines that list the top 100 serial killers. - playwright and poet Ali Riley
Gays who are Christians are schizophrenic, I think. - Patricia Rozema, director of When Night is Falling

The most ironic thing about Kiss was that Gene tried to talk like a college professor while he was dressed like a fucking vampire. - Ace Frehley
If people think I'm a three-headed monster from Mars, that's fine by me. In fact, that would be quite flattering because it would mean I'm much more mysterious and complicated than I really am. - Björk
He's a cutter, that guy - mother's allowance, taxes and now trees. He should be an editor or something. - Jaymz Bee on Mike Harris
I'd like to put him in a pair of diapers, give him a bottle, spank him and put him to bed. - Jayne County on Green Day's Billie Joe
"I normally think the more art the better, but we ain't talking about art here. Do we need all the records that are out there? Did the world need to put pumps on toothpaste and sneakers? New country or new punk? Frankly, some days I'm so entertained I feel sick." - about music
"In the last 25 years, the TTC has grown into an abject beggar." - about the TTC
"Tori Amos, whose guileless piano-bar treatment of Smells Like Teen Spirit hasn't yet been ruled out as a contributing factor in Kurt Cobain's suicide, takes a similarly styled tinkle at REM's Losing My Religion with hurl-inducing results." - about Amos's contribution to the Higher Learning soundtrack
"To Wong Foo makes it official - drag queens are about as subversive as rodeo clowns. The mainstreaming of queer culture continues?." - about To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar
