Canada has committed millions of dollars to the humanitarian effort in Afghanistan. But while these sums dwarf other Canadian relief efforts around the world, they pale in comparison to the money being dropped on the Canuck war effort so far.
Total Military spending: $329 million
For Canada’s war effort in Afghanistan: $210 million
For Canada’s elite anti-terrorist Joint Task Force 2 unit: $119 million
Total Humanitarian spending: $116 million
Amount Liberals committed to Afghan relief in fall 2001 federal budget: $100 million
(CIDA will decide how to spend these funds at a meeting with other donor nations in Tokyo later this month.)
Amount Canada initially provided for post-September 11 Afghan relief efforts: $16 million
