AKRAM’S GUTTED

AKRAM’S GUTTED

By STEVEN DAVEY

When NOW decided to do a survey of falafel huts for this week’s student issue, the very first place I headed to was Akram’s (191 Baldwin, at Kensington, 416-979-3116) in the Market. Since, we’ve named their patty ‘n’ pita combo the best in town several times, it seemed like the obvious place to start, the benchmark as it were. Sadly, we were unable to pit Akram’s against Pita Break and the rest because, as of mid-August, the tiny middle eastern take-away has been closed for renovations. A sign in the window said the shoppe would reopen on Saturday September 15.

Here’s what Akram’s looked like yesterday. The sign’s still there but the 15th has been crossed out and now reads the 30th. Going by the progress so far — except for part of its façade, the entire joint is currently a roofless shell — maybe Christmas would be a more realistic ETA.
