Apple’s iPod and iPhone Updates

Apple has just finished a press conference detailing a bunch of new stuff musically related. I’ll summarize here or you can read Engadget’s live blog of the whole event if you want more details.

Custom ringtones are coming to the iPhone. Of course this doesn’t matter much to us Canadians right now, at least until Roger’s starts stocking the iPhone or if you pay a small fortune for an unlocked model. Apple are shipping an update to iTunes that will include the tools to make ringtones out of your purchased tracks. Only half million of the current 6 million tracks on the iTunes store are eligible for this. This is cool and all, except that you have to pay an additional $0.99 to make a 30 sec sample of the track into a ringtone.

Now on to the iPods:

  • Shuffle is getting some new colours, including a Product Red version like the current Nano.
  • Brand new iPod Nano, much smaller size but with a bigger, higher res. screen, bigger screen, integrated Cover Flow, games (including Sudoku), video playback, increased battery life and comes in 4GB and 8GB versions
  • Standard iPod is being renamed the iPod Classic. Base model is now the 80GB version. Classic is thinner and all metal. New model is 160GB with even longer battery life. Includes Cover Flow navigation as well.
  • iPod Touch is brand new – kind of – it’s basically an iPhone minus the phone bits and a little bit thinner. Comes with the multi-touch interface, and automatically switches to Cover Flow when held landscape. It has wifi and Safari for browsing. Has built in iTunes support so you can purchase tracks directly on your iPhone…I mean iPod Touch.
  • Looks like Stevie’s going to have a good holiday season. Anyone want to buy my 80GB iPod?
