Less noticed among Heritage Toronto’s award winners this year was the Dufferin/St. Clair Library, where circa-1920s murals in the adult reading room were lovingly and painstakingly restored. The original artworks – painted by Toronto artist George Reid, who founded the Ontario College of Art and Design, and his then student Doris McCarthy – took a decade to complete and were inexplicably painted over during a mid-1960s revamp. We’re the richer for their reappearance.
