For the record, there'a big difference between the scrappy, never-say-die, wrong-siode-of-the-tracks underdog played by Richard Gere in An Officer And A Gentleman and the real-life Navy doctor at the centre of the latest Bachelor series.
Namely, the reality doc - Lt. Andy Baldwin, a bland all-American name to match his boring blond hair, Chiclet smile and Boflex body (he's even from the charming, idyllic all-American state of Pennsylvania) - has been wining, dining and romancing a bunch of beautiful women (Gere only got Debra winger, and they reportedly hated each other in real life, despite the onscreen sizzle).
Well, the show wrapped up last night with Andy declaring his love for BOTH of the final two swooning contestants. First he told Bevin he loved her (Bevin is a 28-year-old divorced clinic research coordinator from Palo Alto, Calif., who's doing a study on sexual dysfunction in menopausal women which went over like a lead balloon around Andy's family dinner table. Then he told Tessa, a 28-year-old social worker from San Francisco, that he loved her.
WTF?! Look, I know it's a reality show and a lot of it is scripted (hello? Did you see Andy's shirtless jog along the beach?). But this final episode left a sour taste in my mouth. More so than the usual sour taste these reality shows leave.
Yes, they've all known each other for eight tension-filled weeks, and with all the cameras around and exotic locales and backstabbing and such, emotions can run a little high. And certainly there's a lot of pressure (overt or not) for Andy to pick a mate and propose by the final episode.
But Andy came off like a bit of a dick. He did end up proposing to one of the two and she did say yes (I won't say who just in case you haven't seen the show and you still care... ). But, come on. To profess your love for two women on the same day. This isn't Big Love. You love a person, you propose, that's it. It's not Archie trying to decide between Betty and Veronica. These are real people with real feelings and Andy comes across not like he's toying with them, but like some overly sensitive teen who has no idea what real love is. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
