Big 3: Greet the Pan Am torch

1. Greet the Pan Am torch

The Bloor Viaduct Bridge shuts down Saturday (July 4) for the arrival of the Pan Am torch and the sixth annual Thrill Of The Grill, which raises money for kidney cancer, specifically Sunnybrook‘s Odette Cancer Centre. Try ribs made by Danforth-area chefs from Allen’s, the Combine Eatery, Das Gasthaus, Factory Girl, Globe Bistro, Tapas at Embrujo and the Meat Department. Vegetarians can chow down on seasoned grilled corn while celebrating the lighting of the bridge at 10 pm. Danforth west of Broadview, 6:30 to 10:30 pm. $20 with ribs, $10 without. now.uz/1BSlPI9.

2. For jobs, justice and climate

Quite possibly the most important event on this summer’s enviro calendar is the March For Jobs, Justice And The Climate, setting out from Queen’s Park at 1 pm on Sunday (July 5). From there it heads to Dundas and up Jarvis to Allan Gardens for a celebration. Naomi Klein calls the event “the first steps toward a new kind of climate movement.” She should know. She helped forge the alliance of aboriginal groups and the union representing tar sands workers that make up part of the movement. Free.jobsjusticeclimate.ca.

3. Edible urban forest

Every year our city trees and shrubs produce a beautiful bounty of delicious food ripe for the picking. On Tuesday (July 7), LEAF joins Not Far from the Tree in a tour to see what’s growing in the Riverdale nabe while introducing Torontonians to urban fruit-picking and -sharing programs. 7 to 9 pm. Pwyc-$5. Meet at Withrow Park Field House, 725 Logan. Pre-register at yourleaf.org.
