1. Hope after Hiroshima

The Hiroshima Day Coalition‘s annual remembrance of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki strikes an optimistic tone this year with a commemoration entitled Ground Zero To Global Zero: Hope After 70 Years at the Church of the Holy Trinity on Thursday (August 6). NDP MP Paul Dewar, of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament, heads up the speakers’ list. Also featured: display tables, lantern ceremony and performances by Ron Korb, Raging Asian Women, Pax Christi Chorale and the Raging Grannies. 4:30 to 8:30 pm. 2. Lovin’ local food

Innovative foodies, celebrity chefs and chef competitions take over Yonge-Dundas Square Saturday (August 8) as part of a full-day celebration of the best of T.O.’s local food scene. The Live Green Toronto event promises some of the best food and drink the city has to offer, not to mention lessons in the importance of local food to greening our communities. 3. Get kids healthy

Not every child gets the chance to thrive. So, kudos to Right to Play, which uses sport and play to educate and empower children and youth to overcome poverty, conflict and disease. Hip-hop pioneer Brother Ernie Paniccioli joins the Back To The Block BBQ event Saturday (August 8) at the Native Canadian Centre (16 Spadina Road), where a silent auction benefits the org.
