Big 3: Movember madness

1. MOVEMBER MADNESS

Get out your wildest costume and head to the Social Capital Theatre (154 Danforth) on Saturday (October 31) for the annual Close Shave fundraiser – this one themed Star Trek Masquerade – benefiting Movember Canada. The Movember movement urges men to grow moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness about prostate and testicular cancer. The Dandies host a night of comedy, cosplay contests and karaoke. $10. 8 pm. 416-903-5388.

2. NDP ELECTION POST-MORTEM

How did it all go so wrong for the NDP in election 2015? It’s time for some heavy-duty soul-searching for the party, but is it time for a new federal leader? On the latter, most don’t think so, but you may have other ideas. The party’s Socialist Caucus wants to hear them. It’s hosting a public forum at OISE Thursday (October 29). 7 pm. 252 Bloor West. ndpsocialists.ca.

3. BUILDING JUST COMMUNITIES

Kali Akuno talks up racial and economic justice through neighbourhood defence committees, alternative community development, and political engagement at Seneca Yorkgate Campus on Friday (October 30). Akuno is the founder of Cooperation Jackson and a key member of the late Chokwe Lumumba’s successful mayoral campaign in Jackson, Mississippi. Free. 6 pm. 1 Yorkgate, rooms 218-9. socialjustice.org.
