Big 3: Support Syria’s refugees

1. SUPPORT SYRIA’S REFUGEES

The plight of Syrian refugees may have slipped off the front pages, but the crisis has by no means abated. Many are attempting harrowing journeys to not always hospitable countries. Local talents, including Thom Allison, Micah Barnes, Julie Michaels and many more, have united to perform in Five Thousand Miles, a benefit for the Rosedale United Church Refugee Committee, which is now actively facilitating a large number of sponsorships. Great cause, great lineup. Sunday (November 8) at Rosedale United Church, 159 Roxborough. 3 pm. $25-$30. eventbrite.ca.

2. STOP BLOWING SMOKE ON WEED

What does the research say about the harms of cannabis use? The truth may blow your mind. Jürgen Rehm, director of the social and epidemiological research department at CAMH, presents the evidence with UK neuropsychopharmacologist David Nutt in a discussion moderated by the CBC’s Paul Kennedy at the Munk School of Global Affairs, 1 Devonshire Place, Monday (November 9) at 7 pm. Free. Pre-register at eventbrite.ca

3. HOW TO DO ANTI-POVERTY ACTIVISM

The Studio for Media Activism and Critical Thought blurs the lines between media, artmaking, activism and academia in an interactive lecture presentation by youth homelessness activist LGBTQ researcher, Dr. Alex Abramovich and street nurse Cathy Crowe at Ryerson University’s Eaton Lecture Hall, Tuesday (November 10). Abramovich is a recognized expert in the area of youth mental health. Crowe is a co-founder of the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee and was named distinguished visiting practitioner at Ryerson in 2013. 7 pm. Free. 80 Gould. studioformediaactivism.com.
