1. Victor Walk steps up to child abuse

Former NHL star Theoren Fleury leads this year’s Victor Walk in support of those living with childhood trauma on Saturday (July 25). The 5-kilometre walk, which starts at Old City Hall at noon, coincides with five days of events planned across the country to raise awareness of child abuse. This year’s walk will raise funds for the Breaking Free Foundation, a non-profit started by Fleury “to provide survivors of traumatic life events with the treatment and support needed to reclaim their lives.” victorwalk.com.


2. Art in the age of surveillance

Lawyer Barbara Jackman joins Ryerson criminology prof Graham Hudson, Toronto-based artist Francisco-Fernando Granados and writer Jayne Wilkinson in a round table discussion on the rise of state surveillance in Canada – and the role of art in response – at Sur Gallery Thursday (July 23). 3. Broken Pencil looks sharp 


Indie literary magazine Broken Pencil turns 20 on Thursday (July 23) with a big bash at the Gladstone. The event includes reverse fortune-telling by Alicia Grant, who tells you what you were like two decades ago, readings by Robert Dayton, Jonathan Culp and Liz Worth, and crowd karaoke singing of 90s hits. $5 gets you the current anniversary issue. 8 pm. 1214 Queen West. brokenpencil.com.
