revolution of the two-wheeled variety is hitting the streets of Havana, Cuba. The Community Bicycle Network (CBN), a coalition of Toronto-based bicycle advocacy groups, is launching a project aimed at shipping up to 8,000 bicycles to the island nation over the next three years. The project is backed by CIDA.
Says project manager Nanni Reddy, "The training program and cooperative will create jobs and equip trainees with valuable skills."
The Cuban government, reeling from an oil shortage and eager to attract more tourists, has declared Old Havana a car-free zone. But the success of this plan, Reddy says, depends on how many bikes Canadians can donate. Contact CBN at 416-504-2918 or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
