In honour of International Women’s Day, Spotify Canada partnered with LU KALA to create a playlist of women artists who have inspired her throughout her life.
The playlist is part of the streaming platform’s Equal Canada program, celebrating women artists year-round and focusing on spotlighting creations from women across the country.
LU KALA is a bold, Congolese-Canadian pop artist, taking the world by storm off the strength of her empowering song, “Pretty Girl Era,” which made rounds on TikTok, and her first Billboard Hot 100 entry, which debuted at No. 83 on Latto’s “Lottery.”
“Music offers me the ability to be heard but not always seen. I believe that women need support on all fronts. Feeling invisible is a very real thing. You never quite know what that looks like unless you’re in it. Over the years, there has been far more inclusion in spaces that were once male dominated but we still have a long way to go,” LU KALA said in a press release, discussing finding her strength to journey through the challenging music industry.
“Being a Black plus size pop artist on the rise comes with its fair share of challenges. Far too many to list but I’m so grateful to those who have kicked in those doors and shattered those glass ceilings so that I can do what I love for a living. They are proof that there is room for all of us, we just have to be willing to show up and speak out. After all, women make the world go round,” she continued.
Other Canadian women artists featured in the playlist include Shania Twain, Fefe Dobson, Jessie Reyez, Benita, bülow, Lowell and others.
Spotify is also honouring LU KALA with a billboard at Yonge-Dundas Square from Mar. 10 through 12.
