Cheese Dairy Goes Down

Food shopping in the Annex is about to take another hit as the Cheese Dairy gets set to close. The store, independently run on the north side of Bloor near Howland, sold cheese, coffee, treats and pastas and ran a decent deli counter where you could get smoked salmon, pates, olives and lots of other goodies.

What gives? Elizabeth’s went down, the Cheese Dairy goes down. The only thing going up are organic food stores and while that may be a good thing, it’s not going to help those of us trying to purchase a decent hunk of protein or those of us looking for variety when it comes to produce. Where does an Annex resident buy fish? Meat? Cheese?

Duh, that was a rhetorical question. I know the answer dammit: The Dominion at Spadina and Bloor, or the Loblaws at Dupont and Christie. But a funky neighbourhood full of students and activists deserves a few independantly run grocery stores.

Bring ’em on.
