Ontario reported 744 new cases of COVID-19 cases and 24 more deaths on June 5 as the daily count drops following a spike on Friday.

The province confirmed 914 cases on Friday. There were 870 on Thursday, 733 cases on Wednesday, 699 on Tuesday, 915 on Monday and 1,033 on Sunday. The seven-day average for new infections continued to decline and is now 844, down from 1,248 last Saturday.

Toronto reported 181 new cases today, according to Ministry of Health data. The city’s case rate per 100,000 people is now 6.63 per cent, down from 8.35 per cent a week ago.

“Locally, there are 181 new cases in Toronto, 123 in Peel, 61 in Hamilton, 51 in the Region of Waterloo, 48 in York Region and 48 in the Porcupine Health Unit region,” Health Minister Christine Elliott said on Twitter.

With today’s 24 deaths, the virus has now killed 8,844 people in the province.

Labs in the province completed more than 27,800 new cases in the past day. The testing positivity rate is now 3.1 per cent, an increase over the past three days when the rate was 2.8 per cent but down from 3.6 per cent last Saturday.

Another 1,242 people have recovered in the past day. The total number of confirmed active COVID-19 cases in Ontario is now 8,937.

There are 625 patients in Ontario hospitals, down by 62 since yesterday. Of those, 516 are in intensive care units including 362 – or 70.2 per cent – on ventilators.

As of 8 pm last night, the province had administered 9,834,182 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, including 172,855 doses administered on Friday.
