Curtain falls on the Brunswick

Rating: NNNNN

It’s light out for another rep cinema in Toronto – this time the Brunswick.

But unlike other theatres that have closed, managed to reinvent themselves and reopened, the Brunswick’s Bloor location looks like it’s destined to turn into office space. Owners Scott Gilbert and Bre Walt say rising overhead costs made them pull the plug on a three-year lease after only one year.

A $1,500 cleanup bill for postering on EcoMedia’s garbage bins only added to the Brunswick’s financial woes. EcoMedia’s now threatening to sue if the Brunswick doesn’t ante up.

Gilbert and Walt say they’re looking for new digs, hopefully with wheelchair accessibility, around Christie or Dufferin, where rents are cheaper.

The two plan to show films on campuses in university towns across southern Ontario over the next three months to raise funds for their planned 2008 relaunch.

Meanwhile, theatre members with time on their memberships can exchange them for DVDs or books.
