A customer says she found glass in a dessert cup from a restaurant in Hamilton, but the establishment claims it did not come from their kitchen.

Helen Tran recently posted a video online showing pieces of glass she found in a Kunafa Milk Cake Cup Explosion that she got from a D-Spot restaurant in Hamilton.

According to her, she had already eaten half of the dessert, and even offered a few bites to her daughter, when she felt something hard and decided to check what it was.

“It was really, really hard, and it started feeling a little bit sandy. So, I took it out of my mouth to inspect it…I ran [it] underwater, and I saw glass in it,” she told Now Toronto on Tuesday.

Tran says she thankfully didn’t swallow any big pieces of glass, and checked in with a doctor, who said she should be OK. But the incident left her shocked and second-guessing her dining out experiences.

“Honestly, I was so shocked. Dining out I’ve never had [any] experience like that, so it’s shocking. And then I took pictures and videos, because my husband wasn’t home, and I sent it to him, he’s like, ‘Oh my God, good thing you didn’t get injured,’” she added.

The customer said she promptly contacted the restaurant to get an explanation.

But D Spot tells Now Toronto that after conducting a thorough internal investigation, it hasn’t found any evidence that the glass came from its kitchen.

“Following an internal review of our procedures, supply chain, and store operations, we found no evidence that would suggest this occurred within our environment. Our cups and packaging come from trusted suppliers and are handled under strict quality control standards. We believe this may be an extreme outlier or external occurrence, though we continue to review all possibilities with care,” a spokesperson for the restaurant said in an email statement on Monday.

After Tran’s complaints, the restaurant also went through a public health inspection, which found that their food is “protected from contamination or adulteration,” in addition to no evidence of broken glass or equipment, and most cup ingredients to be pre-packed, according to documents.

D Spot also says that even though it is confident in its safety procedures, it went through additional reviews and protocol reinforcement with staff to make sure the concern was addressed.

Nevertheless, Tran says she would still like an explanation as to how the glass ended up in her cup.

She says that although she made the order through an app, her husband personally picked up the dessert cup from the store and brought it home with a lid on. The glass was then found on the bottom of the cup.

“There’s no way, because I ate three fourths of the cup and it was all the way at the bottom,” she said. “I just wanted people to be careful dining out, because, you know, you don’t really expect these types of things to happen to you, but it could.”

According to Tran, D Spot also offered her a complimentary meal for the family as compensation, which she didn’t accept.

Meanwhile, the restaurant emphasizes it has passed health inspections and investigations, but couldn’t find anything to prove the glass came from the restaurant.

“D Spot is a place built on community, care, and consistency. We deeply value the trust our customers place in us and remain committed to operating at the highest level of safety and service across all of our locations,” the spokesperson added.
