Day 1: Fall 2007 Toronto Fashion Week Report

Day 1: Fashion Week warm up

The debut of Jason Meyers’ dress heavy label one year ago was as grungy and glam as a bar-topped fashion show at the Social can be. A gaggle of models in red satin dresses and hyper ruffled blouses earned hoots and hollers as they expertly strutted down the thin strip of concrete. Meeting the designer next door at 69 Vintage post-show made me instantly respect Meyers’ free style spirit. He had decided to skip out on Toronto’s Fashion Design Council of Canada-driven fashion week system (mildly risky business) but showed no fear of doing it for himself.

That fearlessness lived on during the third Jason Meyers presentation at his new Liberty Village studio on Thursday, March 8. Despite his offsite and off-schedule shows, Meyers has developed a healthy front row of media (FLARE, the Toronto Star, celeb stylist Linda Gaylard) and retailers (Holt Renfrew and Boutique Le Trou).

The fall 2007 collection offered them evening wear in black, white, grey and electric chartreuse. Black silk was cut into a cinched evening coat with oversized epaulettes. Meyers’ signature bows appeared tied through elbow-mounted belt loops and around the waist of an acid green goddess gown. White ruffles on a halter-style dress and a half tutu tied around a turtleneck and leggings look felt a little French maid but still showed off quality construction and a playful attention to detail.
