What do Sarah Polley and a bikini clad cage dancer at Queen West swingers club Wicked have in common? Both seemed un-titillated enough by the opening party for Young People Fucking last night that they turned to text messaging to pass the time. Seeing Polley type out a mobile message in the lobby was no surprise. Burying your nose in a cell phone lets you pacify party boredom without being a pooper.
Watching the dancer-behind-bars fiddling with her Razr mid hip thrusts and jiggles though was a curiosity that eclipsed the carnal slideshows and Canadian content filling the room.
This was definitely a party that benefited from real estate's golden rule: location, location, location. Every hipster who ever joked about stopping by Wicked one night finally had an excuse to actually go. I hadn't witnessed any orgies by the time I decamped for the next bash at 12:30 but I had made mental notes of the DJ booth made from the front section of a late model BMW (all the better for rolling around on the hood) and the "One towel per person" sign on the stairway up to the "Shlomo's Penthouse" play room upstairs.
Earlier, I flew solo to the official TIFF opening night party at the Liberty Grand. The parking lot in front of the Exhibition Place hall was full of up dos and prom dresses waiting for friends with tickets to show. Inside, it looked like the tear filled climax of an episode of Rich Bride Poor Bride where the scene is set beautifully but everyone's late.
One suit remarked that personal space would be at a premium in an hour while another couple made a bee line for the VIP room so they could, at least, feel special if not popular.
Last stop was boystown dance hole Fly where NYC celebrity spinners The Misshapes were launching a new style book featuring photos of guests and celebs at their Saturday night parties modeling home made couture. The trio of Leigh Lezark, Greg Krelenstein and Geordon Nicol are rumoured to be fiddling their fader tonight at Holt Renfrew's party celebrating the launch of Sienna and Savanah Miller's Twenty8Twelve clothing line.
