Eat your heart out, PETA

No doubt the Governor General took a political risk in chowing down on the heart of a seal in Nunavut’s Rankin Inlet on Tuesday, but PETA officials go too far.

Taking part in the ritual and honouring native traditions, they’re quoted as saying, is tantamount to “taking part in the beating of women in the Middle East because it is part of local practice.”

The comparison is totally odious on so many levels.

First of all, the characterization of the Middle East as a place where women are routinely beaten demonstrates an enormous ignorance. There’s no such thing as “local practice” in the Middle East. The only thing that matters when it comes to the treatment of women is fundamentalist practice and you see that all over.

And women are not seals.

It reminds me of Toronto dog owners who think their pets’ right to run all over our downtown parks trump parental concerns for the well-being of their children. “Oh, he’s harmless,” I used to hear the pit bull owner say as his pooch leapt all over my completely terrified 5 year-old. “Oh, can’t we bring our German shepard over? He’s family just like your daughter is.” Get real.

Talk about true colours coming out. I guess we know now what PETA thinks of women.

Or should I say, “Arf arf,” in solidarity with my brother and sister seals?
