Eko Bitch

Mash-ups were always a bit of a novelty: take two seemingly disparate tunes and, through the miracle of Pro Tools, seam them together. The first few broke new ground – see the collected works of DJ Earworm, Party Ben, and Go Home Productions for evidence – but the genre soon tired.

This video mix by French multi-tasker DJ Le Clown takes the venerable none-more-vanilla new wave 80s classic Echo Beach by Toronto’s Martha and the Muffins and filters it through Busta Rhymes’ raunchy ’03 I Love My Bitch. The results are startling. Wherever did the idea originate?

“Echo Beach was a major hit in France,” says Le Clown who also goes by Phillippe Maujard. “The guitar is fantastic! And Busta Rhymes is the best male hip hop singer on the planet. Besides, to the French, bitch and beach sound the same.”

As well as the Muffins’ and Rhymes’ original video – that’s the Black Eyed Peas’ Will I. Am and R & B diva Kelis featured in the latter – Le Clown’s montage appropriates lo-fi footage from Quentin Tarantino’ Kill Bill, manga auteur Shiro Masamune’s Appleseed, Luis Bunuel’s Un Chien Andalou, Salvador Dali’s unreleased Destino Disney clip, an animated Laura Croft, and a cameo by the Avengers’ Emma Peel.

“I think it’s hilarious,” says the Muffins’ Mark Gane who wrote Echo Beach back in 1978. “And I love the ‘naughty girl’ theme. As a kid, I was totally in love with Emma Peel. Who would’ve thought we’d finally be brought together after all these years?”

As the Food Channel warns, Eko Bitch may include scenes of violence, foul language and nudity. Here’s the video.
