GREEN PARTY POOPERS
Wouldn't you just know that while Olivia Chow lost to Tony Ianno by 1,005 votes, the Greens in Trinity-Spadina sucked up 1,672. Talk about splitters. The same thing, it turns out, happened in nine other ridings. For sustainable energy folks, the Greens are sure blowing a lot of bad wind.
It was kind of Jack Layton to save Toronto-Danforth from the warped entrepreneurialism of Dennis Mills. But it seems the NDP honcho's dramatic win has only unleashed that misguided pol to run wild on the whole city. Mills is now saying he's in line to take over the hated Toronto Port Authority. Suddenly, we're all in trouble.
ARE THEY REALLY STILL HERE?
You can pretend it ain't so, but a raft of useless pols made it back again. If justice prevailed on earth, here's who would have been dumped: Alan Tonks (York South-Weston) because he's lazy; Sarmite Bulte (Parkdale-High Park) because she's only around at election time; Mario Silva (Davenport) because he's in the pocket of developers; Tony Ianno because he has no record to speak of despite three terms in office; Joe Volpe (Eglinton-Lawrence) because he supports the bridge to the Island Airport; Carolyn Bennett (St. Paul's) because she pretends she's a lefty but votes like a Liberal; Maria Minna (Beaches-East York) because she's tainted by scandal; and all those MPs from Scarborough - Tom Wappel (Scarborough Southwest), Derek Lee (Scarborough-Rouge River), John McKay (Scarborough-Guildwood), Jim Karygiannis (Scarborough-Agincourt) and John Cannis (Scarborough Centre) - because they're just plain weird.
MOST INSPIRING CAMPAIGN
At a time when young people are opting out, 18-year-old NDPer Max Silverman, an anti-globalization activist and sensible Mideast peace advocate goes flat out in a hopeless race in affluent Eglinton-Lawrence against Grit Joe Volpe. We can only think that a party open to the likes of Silverman is a party planning its future.
MOST DELICIOUS SURPRISE
Eco activist and musician Charlie Angus, last seen in T.O. dashing plans to haul T.O. trash to Adams Mine, captures Timmins-James Bay for the NDP and ups the quotient of passionate and persuasive social dem parliamentarians.
MOTHER OF ALL RELIEF
Tony Clement, David Turnbull and Dave Johnson, Harris cabinet ministers all, get the boot from savvy once-burned constituents. Earth to Ontario Tories: Walkerton was only three years ago. What possessed you?
