Eyeing the Prizes at Berlin

This year’s Berlin felt underwhelming at times, but it was huge. There were roughly 430,000 bums in seats for the festival’s 373 films, according to the Berlinale’s figures. That included 200,000 tickets bought by the public, 19,000 accredited visitors from 127 countries, including 4.000 journalists.

And the winners are:

GOLDEN BEAR FOR THE BEST FILM – Tuya’s Marriage by Wang Quan’an

THE JURY GRAND PRIX – SILVER BEAR – The Other by Ariel Rotter

SILVER BEAR FOR BEST DIRECTOR – Joseph Cedar for Beaufort

SILVER BEAR FOR BEST ACTRESS – Nina Hoss in Yella by Christian Petzold

SILVER BEAR FOR BEST ACTOR – Julio Chavez in The Other by Ariel Rotter

SILVER BEAR FOR AN OUTSTANDING ARTISTIC CONTRIBUTION – to the ensemble cast of The Good Shepherd by Robert De Niro

SILVER BEAR FOR THE BEST MUSIC TO – David Mackenzie for the use of music in his film Hallam Foe

ALFRED BAUER PRIZE, awarded in memory of the Festival founder, for a work of particular innovation – I’m A Cyborg, But That’s Ok by Park Chan-wook

BEST FIRST FEATURE AWARD – Vanaja by Rajnesh Domalpalli

Prizes of the Ecumenical Jury
to directors who have succeeded in portraying actions or human experiences that are in keeping with the Gospels, or in sensitising viewers to spiritual, human or social values.
