Final Fantasy XII (PS2) Rating: NNNN
Role Playing Game
Fans of Final Fantasy have visited the world of Ivalice before in Final Fantasy Tactics and again in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. The mix of humans and humanoid creatures side by side makes this is a departure from the usual makeup of most Final Fantasy tales. With a long introduction to the game and new battle system, FFXII dips near toward cut-scene hell, but it's so engrossing you don't really care.
With a new combat system that makes exploring and combat seamless, this change benefits the game flow tremendously by not throwing you into a new screen to fight your battles. Some like it, some hate the change. There is also the gambit system of setting your party members to do something if an event occurs - for instance, healing a party member if their HP falls to below 50%. I see this appealing to the more technical crowd, reveling in the minutae.
This epic adventure has great voice acting, gorgeous graphics, and a fully fleshed-out story line. Though I expect no less from Sqaure-Enix, it is still breathtaking to see some of the movie renders.
So for those not fortunate enough to find a PS3 this season, Fortune still smiles upon thee. The next long-awaited installment of the Final Fantasy series is on the PS2 to tide you over until obtaining a PS3 does not involve sleeping overnight on cold concrete in minus degree weather.
