Fantino’s plays footsies with Tories

Rating: NNNNN

What’s next for soon-to-be ex-Toronto police chief Julian Fantino? While he claims to have no interest in a late-life career in politics, the provincial Tories certainly seem interested in the 62-year-old cop as a candidate in the next provincial election. In fact, there’s already talk in top Ontario Conservative circles about Fantino running for the Tories against Liberal Finance Minister Greg Sorbara in suburban Vaughan-King-Aurora come the next province-wide vote. Conservative leadership candidate Jim Flaherty went so far as to raise the possibility of such a showdown in Sorbara’s presence when the two political adversaries were panel members during Citytv’s federal election special Monday night.

This one may have legs, considering that both the far-right Flaherty and John Tory – his more moderate challenger for the provincial PC helm – are seen to be big fans of the chief, who got a pink slip from the police services board last week.
