This summer’s best free stuff

Everyone loves a freebie, and there are all kinds to take advantage of this summer.

Best free music shows are the North By Northeast outdoor extravaganzas at Yonge-Dundas Square, with Social Distribution on June 13, The National June 14, Billy Talent June 15 and Big Boi June 16. But there’s good stuff every Thursday at indie music and film fest Open Roof, beginning with a gig by the Sheepdogs June 20 at 175 Queens Quay East (openrooffestival.com).

Tired of dropping megabucks on tix and popcorn at your local multiplex? Watch pics for free in three locations. The City Cinema program at Yonge-Dundas Square has screenings Tuesdays, beginning June 25 with Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (yds.ca). Harbourfront’s Free Flicks series on Wednesdays begins July 3 with the director’s cut of Little Shop Of Horrors. NOW’s Norman Wilner programs the series, so it’s gotta be good (harbourfrontcentre.com). TIFF In The Park, also on Wednesdays, screens romance films including The Way We Were (July 31).

And Harbourfront is a haven for hot and happening cultural festivals every weekend, offering music, crafts and food. Check out sizzling Latin American fest Ritmo Y Color July 5 to 7 and the best of Iranian talent performing at the Tirgan Festival July 18 to 21. Jump up at the Island Soul fest August 2 to 5, find the Filippino fun at Mabuhay! August 16 to 18, and experience all things Taiwanese August 23 to 25.

Looking for some eco action? There’s a free shuttle from the Danforth subway station to the Brick Works, where the hiking’s great and you can chow down at the locavore Café Belong.

The Luminato Festival is packed with ticketed events, but the June 22 literary picnic at Trinity Bellwoods Park featuring over 30 authors, including local lights Michael Helm and Katrina Onstad, is free.

Stop and smell the flowers at Allan Gardens any day of the week, or party with your pooch at Woofstock June 8 and 9 in the St. Lawrence Market nabe.

And then tell us you can’t get something for nothing these days.
