Pot advocates are choking on provincial Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty’s recent about-face on legalization. When even his federal counterparts are exploring the wonders of medicinal marijuana, and medical use has been upheld in the courts, McGuinty’s sudden public opposition to legal pot use for any reason in a recent TVO interview seems out of touch.”I’m sorry that he seems to be lining up with the prohibitionist point of view when it’s becoming clearer and clearer, at least in terms of medical marijuana, that the public is way ahead of him,” says Lee Zaslofsky, spokesperson for the Toronto AIDS Committee.

The group has followed a number of cases where marijuana has helped improve appetite and curb pain.

Says Zaslofsky, “If what he’s saying is no marijuana use is acceptable or advisable, he’s just plain wrong on health grounds.”

Liberal MPP George Smitherman, who represents the gay ghetto, says as far as he knows McGuinty has not withdrawn his support of medical marijuana use.
