It’s official: Rob Ford is now a tragic figure. After various mini-scandals resulting from his privileging the high school football team he coaches over his duties as elected mayor of the City of Toronto, Ford led his Don Bosco Eagles all the way the Metro Bowl, only for them to lose 18-24 to the Huron Heights Warriors.
You may expect us to make a joke about how Ford is filing for an appeal on the scoring, or otherwise just point and laugh with a Muntzian “ha-ha” about the latest in what seems like a career entirely constituted by gaffes, minor embarrassments, and out-and-out humiliations. But if Mayor Ford clearly gave a rip about one thing, it was his high school football team. So it’s kind of legitimately sad to see this slip away, too. Though congratulations to Huron Heights, who through nothing but sheer adolescent vigor and good ol’ fashioned teamsmanship, have managed to cap off what’s been an insanely eventful half of a week, civic politics-wise.
