Former MPP Michael Bryant charged after cyclist death

What happened last night on Bloor?

It’s all still under investigation, but this is what’s being reported today:

After a lengthy altercation with a motorist, a cyclist was killed at around 9:45 pm. Bearing witness were road crews and pedestrians.

Reports have the motorist and cyclist in an argument, which reports say began at Church and Bloor St. and continued to around Bloor and Bay.

Apparently, the cyclist held onto the driver’s side door of a black Saab convertible as it drove westbound. The Saab swerved into the east bound lane, into oncoming traffic, and hit trees along the south side of Bloor.

The cyclist, who is still unidentified, was killed. He was reportedly 33-years-old and lived downtown.

Police took the motorist into custody in the parking lot of the Park Hyatt Hotel on Avenue Road.

Radio stations reported early this morning, at 5:42 am, that the motorist in custody was former Attorney General Michael Bryant.

Bryant, 43, resigned in June to become CEO of the city’s Invest Toronto corporation. He held the riding of St. Paul’s in north Toronto for 10 years, and was named by NOW readers as the best local MPP in 2008. He is most known for his province-wide ban on pit bulls.

This death has already been added to the Dearly Departed Cyclists map.
