With the holidays lurking and a gap suddenly appearing in our planning schedule, we came up with the idea of naming the 50 essential DVDs. It was the only time – other than this week’s issue – when an “all-time” list was the cover story. And we had just the writer to produce the feature: not only could the late John Harkness, our senior film writer, mine his incredible knowledge of the movies, but he was lightning fast. He produced his list just one hour after we asked for it. This week’s cover story was much more complicated. For one thing, in 2004 the DVD itself was only six years old. Albums have been around for over six decades, so there was way more product to choose from. And we consulted only one expert – film writer Harkness – for our DVD file. This week we surveyed over 50 people on T.O.’s music scene.
