GLASTONBURY ONLINE

The BBC has just put 40 performances from last weekend’s Glastonbury music fest online here.

The UK TV net has uploaded sets from the likes of Lily Allen, the Who, Maximo Park, Bloc Party, CSS, Beirut, and Madonna’s new faves Gogol Bordello. For contractual reasons, Dame Shirley Bassey (!) and Arctic Monkeys only get a song apiece, though in the case of the one-note Monkeys, that’s more than plenty.

The surprise hit of the fest was Beth Ditto of the Gossip, who start off sounding like the White Stripes with a better singer and a worse drummer who, by the time they slam into closing Standing In The Way Of Control in front of 200,000 mud-splattered in a downpour, come across like stadium superstars. Beth even stage dives!

Best of the rest include a surprisingly spry Iggy Pop and the original Stooges playing the same songs that regularly got them bottled off stage 40 years ago, Hot Chip and an extremely charged Go! Team.

Lamest of the bunch? Pete Doherty and his appropriately named Babyshambles.

Noticably absent? Footage of Montreal’s Arcade Fire but you can find that all over YouTube. Including right here:
