Happening NOW: June 14, 2010

What’s happening June 14, 2010:

Apparently being a bumbling loud mouth resonates with Etobicoke’s voters when it comes to picking a mayor. Because of westenders, Rob Ford actually came out on top of a Globe/CTV/CP24/Nanos poll. His margin was very slim – 17.8 per cent to Smitherman’s 15.9. The margin of error was 3.1, but should have been 17.8 per cent.

Sticking with the annoying, loud, obnoxious and “let’s get rid of it” theme, World Cup officials have not ruled out banning vuvuzelas. Those are the weirld buzzing horns drowning out soccer games in South Africa. People seem to like them – going so far as to say they’re some kind of cultural noisemaker, even though some dude just invented the plastic trumpet seven years ago.

Turns out our downtown is Manhattanizing. The downtown population has risen 20 per cent in the last 10 years and Adam Vaughan wants to amend the Official Plan to force large condo builders to actually create units where people can raise a family – not just plant the seed.

As Obama heads to the Gulf catastrophe region, there’s talk of a multi-billion dollar fund aimed at balancing economic fallout being created. It’s not clear how those dollar bills will instantly absorb the oil off dead wildlife.

At last, a tiny shimmer of hope that people aren’t insane about Beatles and their related trash trinkets. In this case, a recording of a 1966 news conference they had in Toronto didn’t sell for the expected $20,000. Maybe people just downloaded it online for free.[rssbreak]
