HIV/AIDS Legal Network joins call to Premier on Bill C-36

With the support of 18 HIV/AIDS-focused organizations, the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network has joined Toronto city councillors and sex worker advocacy groups calling on the Premier to ask the Ontario Court of Appeal (Bill C-35) to determine if the Feds’ new Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act is constitutional.

The act received royal assent last month, will become a law tomorrow (December 6).

“The overwhelming evidence concerning sex work demonstrates that the criminalization of sex work – both directly through a prohibition on the purchase of sex, and indirectly through prohibitions on advertising sexual services, receipt of ‘financial or other material benefit’ from sex work and procuring, all of which are found in the Act – contributes to harms to sex workers,” reads the letter.
