In photos: A gutting loss for Toronto’s NDP as the Liberals sweep the city

After a long, seemingly endless election campaign, the NDP came up empty-handed in the GTA as the Liberals swept the city, save for two conservative ridings in Markham and Thornhill.

NOW’s Tanja-Tiziana and Cheol Joon Baek visited some of the most hotly contested ridings last night to document the political triumphs and accompanying carnage:

In Jack Layton’s former stronghold of Toronto-Danforth, the NDP’s Craig Scott hugged supporters after losing to the Liberals’ Julie Dabrusin by just a couple hundred votes.

In Spadina-Fort York, a race we were watching very closely, Liberal Adam Vaughan raced ahead of the NDP’s Olivia Chow, taking 55 per cent of the votes in the riding.

At Lula Lounge on Dundas West, Councillor Mike Layton and the NDP’s Alejandra Bravo were on hand to lend support to incumbent Andrew Cash. At around midnight, the candidate conceded his seat to Liberal Julie Dzerowicz in another tight race, with Cash losing by 3 per cent of the votes in the Davenport riding.

And in University-Rosedale, the Liberals delivered another blow to the NDP, with former Toronto Centre MP Chrystia Freeland easily overcoming the NDP’s Jennifer Hollett – who was all smiles and stuck around to pose for photos with supporters after a long campaign.
