Injured pride at ProudFM

All hell is breaking loose since queer radio station Proud FM fired four of the station’s on-air personalities – Deb Pearce, Patrick Marano, Shaun Proulx and Mark Wigmore – last week.

According to a press release sent out by the group, the quartet were unhappy about a some of the station’s new practices – some of which reportedly involve management’s desire to give advertisers more love – and asked for a group meeting with management and human resource facilitation with parent company Evanov Radio Group.

They were sacked the same day.

The four canned employees obviously have a huge fan base. A Facebook page supporting the foursome tracks the outrage of unhappy listeners.

Sean Moreman, Evanov’s General Counsel, would not talk about why the team was fired, saying, “Once all the facts are public, people will get a clearer picture as to what is going on.”

As for the Facebook page, he says, “On the one hand, we’re glad to see that there’s a reaction – that means the community is listening and cares. But Facebook contributors have bought into a lot of the rumours.”

Moreman’s referring specifically to scuttlebutt that Proud FM is about to go mainstream and lose its queer focus. A statement from Evanov Radio states categorically that this is not their intention.

“We put up our position on Facebook and the administrator took it down.”

Moreman also remarked, “If the group feels that they been treated badly, they can sue us.”

Papers to that effect were delivered to Evanov at 2:15 pm today (May 13).[rssbreak]
